How To Hang Lighting Fixtures In a Kitchen

Different types of lighting offer different functions. Wall sconces, semi-flushes, flush mounts, and track lights are very popular in spaces like kitchens. Some fixtures can be mounted on sloped ceilings or offer pivoting shades and angles which can help with task lighting and directional lighting.

Depending on the placement of the fixture, you may need to consider opting for a fixture that is either dry or damp rated. Damp rated fixtures are recommended for kitchen installations due to the heat and moisture kitchens can produce. However, kitchens with windows or tall ceilings allow for more ventilation and thus dry application fixtures can be installed in these spaces.

How To Hang Lighting Fixtures Above a Kitchen Island

• Use one pendant for every 24” of counter space
• Use an odd number of pendants to create visual balance
• Whether using chandeliers, single pendants, or a linear pendant be sure to hang 30” above the countertop

Other Quick Tips:

• If the room is smaller than 10' x 10' the fixture should be 17" to 20" wide.
• If the room is around 12' x 12' the fixture should be 22" to 27" wide.
• If the room is around 14' x 14' the fixture should be 24" to 32" wide.
